An efficient method for the N-bromosuccinimide catalyzed synthesis of indolyl-nitroalkanes.

An efficient and practical method for the synthesis of indolyl-nitroalkane derivatives catalyzed by N-bromosuccinimide is described. The generality of this method was demonstrated by synthesizing an array of diverse 3-substituted indole derivatives by the reaction of different beta-nitrostyrenes with various substituted indoles. Simple reaction conditions accompanied by good yields of indolyl-n...

Conversion of nitroalkanes into carboxylic acids via iodide catalysis in water.

We report a new method for the conversion of nitroalkanes into carboxylic acids that achieves this transformation under very mild conditions. Catalytic amounts of iodide in combination with a simple zinc catalyst are needed to give good conversions into the corresponding carboxylic acids.

Comparison of oxidative damage to rat liver DNA and RNA by primary nitroalkanes, secondary nitroalkanes, cyclopentanone oxime, and related compounds.

The hepatocarcinogen 2-nitropropane causes oxidative damage to liver DNA and RNA after administration to rats; increases in 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine and formation of an unknown moiety (DX1) in DNA, plus increases in 8-hydroxyguanosine and the appearance of two unidentified peaks (RX1 and RX2) in RNA were observed by high-performance liquid chromatography of nucleosides from 2-nitropropane-treate...

A one-pot amidation of primary nitroalkanes.

It has been over a half-century since Kornblum demonstrated the conversion of a primary nitroalkane to a carboxylic acid; addition of an amine results in carboxylic acid formation as well. We describe the formation of amides from terminal nitroalkanes in a two-step, one-pot reaction involving tandem halogenation/umpolung amide synthesis (UmAS).

Nitroalkanes as reductive substrates for flavoprotein oxidases.

Nitroalkanes have been found to be general reductive substrates for D-amino acid oxidase, glucose oxidase and L-amino acid oxidase. These enzymes show different specificities for the structure of the nitroalkane substrate. The stoichiometry of the D-amino acid oxidase reaction is straightforward, consisting of the production of one mole each of aldehyde, nitrite and hydrogen peroxide for each m...
